Cheap Digital Prints

by R. J. Evans

One of the biggest advantages of digital cameras is that they allow you to forgo the purchase of film, forever. Sure, you still have to buy memory cards, but a memory card is a durable, one-time purchase while film is an expendiable good that, once you use it, it’s gone. Film is also pretty expensive, even in bulk, and if you take a lot of photos or are a particulary bad photographer the cost of film can be considerable. Not only that, with standard film photography you have to pay processing fees as well as fees for film, making taking a lot of photos over the course of a holiday or vacation an expensive proposition.

Though digital photography allows you to avoid most of these financial problems, most people aren’t content to view their digital photos on their cameras or their computer screens; they want physical prints in their hands. Not only that, they want cheap digital prints. Finding a lab that will print digital photos isn’t a very difficult task anymore, but finding somewhere where you can find cheap ditigal prints is a little toughter.

The most common place to print digital photos is a standard photo processing lab which most likely also processes photos from 35mm film. These labs usually allow you to either drop off your camera or memory card for printing or allow you to print your own photos on user kiosks. If you don’t know much about printing digital photos this is usually a pretty good way to go since you’ll get decent prints without much hassle, but it’s definitely not the best way to get cheap digital prints since you’ll be charged anywhere from $.15 to $.25 per print, which means they cost even more than getting prints from your 35mm rolls of film.

The best way to get cheap digital prints is to get them from an online site which specializes in printing digital photos. Shutterfly is a popular option, though other sites like Yahoo Photos or Flickr allow you to order prints for photos you’ve uploaded. When looking for cheap digital prints it pays to shop around since some digital photo printers will charge you high prices for shipping or require a minimum purchase. Photo quality also varies from one site to another, so before printing 150 photos from your vacation it makes sense to order a small batch first and take a look at the quality before making a big order. Though a relatively high-speed connection makes it easiest to upload a large number of photos, online digital photo printers are great places to find cheap digital prints.
