Tattooing is more fashionable in the West now than at any time for hundreds of years – perhaps even as many as two thousand years, because women are also sporting tattoos nowadays.
It has become very fashionable for women to have a lower back tattoo or ‘tramp stamp’ and for young men to have a kind of Thai tattoo on their upper arm or lower leg.
There are worries with permanent tattooing though. Or at least there can be. Aids and hepatitis may become transferred by using infected needles. This is not common because tattooing studios are aware of the need to use a new needle on every client, but mistakes occur and some studio owners are deceitful. The most common difficulty, however, is infection.
Infection from tattooing is not common, but neither is it unheard of. This is usually the fault of the client and not the tattooer, but it can become dangerous whatever the cause. Permanent tattoos can be got rid of but it is a lot of hard effort and is expensive as well and the results are not always all that pretty.
This is why temporary tattoos are so popular. If you take care of a temporary tattoo it can last a week or more, but it is simple to remove if you would like to do so. Temporary tattoos or transfers used to be given away with chewing gum for children, but nowadays they are of much better quality and durability.
If you are sure that you would like a permanent tattoo, why not get an identical temporary one first and test it out? If you are bored with the tattoo after a week or you do not like the feedback of your friends and family, you can get rid of it and test another design until you find one that suits you better.
Once you find one that you like, you can have it tattooed on permanently. This procedure of choosing a design could save you thousands of dollars in having an undesirable tattoo gotten rid of. Temporary tattoos are easy to apply, but sometimes it is easier if you get a friend to help.
The majority of temporary transfers are applied with water. First you should cleanse the region of hair and grease. Then soak the transfer in (warm) tap water as instructed on the label, position it on the required location and apply firm even pressure for the time recommended, which is normally a matter of minutes.
If you would like to try to preserve the transfer for a longer time, you can spray ‘Second Skin’ or something similar on to the transfer once it is dry. Hairspray may also do the job, but some brands will crack, giving the design a cracked look like an old oil painting.
Temporary tattoos are a fun way to brighten up your wardrobe and there are so many different designs that you can always find a design to suit the event, your disposition and the clothing you want to wear.

The first time that you look up into the night sky and feel the wonder of the universe is the time when the majority of people, even the most revered professional astronomers, think back to if they think about their early interest in the stars. It is normally a very special moment, when an adult took you by the hand, pointed at the stars and said: ‘Look, that is the Pole Star’.
Country people will probably discover the night sky earlier than city dwellers because the atmosphere above a city is normally so polluted that you cannot see the stars from below. There are two types of pollutants that prevent you from seeing the stars in a city, smoke and light. Street lights give off a corona that stops you from seeing the weaker light from the stars behind.
If you want to recapture that moment in your life, why not take a child out into the country to look at the stars one night? If you have a pair of binoculars, so much the better, but they are not crucial. If you have forgotten which stars are which, take a book on the topic or a map of the night sky. These days you can get a map of the night’s sky for the day that you want.
The night sky actually changes every night. The stars and the constellations do not move much, so you should not have too much difficulty finding them, but if a planet is passing by, it will be in another part of the sky each night, which is why it is helpful to get an up-to-date map of the night sky for the date you want to go star gazing.
One of the hardest concepts for a child (or anyone else for that matter to comprehend is the scale of the universe – the sheer size of it. Here are a couple of facts that will amaze most individuals:
1] Our Sun is a star in the galaxy known as the Milky Way and it has its own planets revolving around it. However, there are likely to be 100,000,000,000 (one hundred billion) stars similar to our Sun in the Milky Way.
2] The Milky Way is one of approximately tens of billions of galaxies in the universe and the Milky Way is one of the smaller galaxies.
3] It would take more than 100,000 years to travel from one edge of the Milky Way to the other, if you were going at over five trillion miles per year or more than 570 billion miles per hour.
4] It has been calculated that our Milky Way is 14,000,000,000 (fourteen billion) years old
It is very hard to comprehend astronomical numbers like this but this might help:
1 billion seconds ago, it was 1980
1 billion minutes ago, Jesus had only just died
1 billion hours ago, mankind did not exist

Schools in English-speaking countries are infamously bad at encouraging foreign languages. Or maybe not bad, just totally indifferent. Although anyone who wants to get on in the world has to speak English, things are a-changing and we are waking up to the fact that we are missing out on much by not studying foreign languages.
As everyone knows, it is easier to learn foreign languages when you are younger, so perhaps it would be a good idea for parents to begin teaching their children a foreign language at home, if they cannot rely on the public educational system to do it for them.
All well and good for parents of mixed marriages, I hear you saying, but what if both parents are native English speakers. Well, why not learn the language too at your child’s pace? If you start early enough, the child will still be learning English, so will learn the foreign language slowly anyway and you will easily be able to keep up.
Particularly as, being the teacher, you can manipulate the pace of the learning so you can slow it down to please yourself. The first thing to do is choose a language that you can hear spoken fairly often. Spanish, French and German are probably the best options. Take it from me, Russian and Chinese are not!
Spanish, French and German have lots of words that come from the same ancestry as English words, so that makes it a little easier too. So, let’s say, you choose French. Now you should look around for methods to teach (and learn) French.
One method to start is to buy some bilingual cards with pictures of everyday items like pets, household items, relatives, colours, foodstuffs, numbers and clothing. You could use three to five cards a day in a 15-20 minute lesson and when you have used a card, you could pin it on the wall and refer to it every now and then. This will increase your vocabulary.
You will also have to purchase some blank card, a grammar book, a dictionary and a simple reader in French. It is all very well having a substantial vocabulary of words, but you need to know some verbs to be able to put them together into sentences.
So, say you have both learned the words for ‘mother’ and ‘cat’, you could look up the word for ‘look’, copy it onto a piece of card and pin it between the pictures of mother and the cat. Then you have: “La mere regarde le chat” (mother is looking at the cat). You could repeat this with all the words that make sense until it sinks in.
‘Teach Yourself …’ books are usually fairly decent at offering a structure for your schooling and the best ones have CD’s of indigenous speakers to help you get the accent correct. Often the course work is mirrored on the CD chapter by chapter to make it even easier.
You can look on eBay and choose some CD’s of simple French nursery rhymes and buy some good cartoon stories like Asterix the Gaul. The text is meant for children, so you will easily be able to follow it. They are fairly good as well and should hold both your kid’s and your own attention for hours, but only do a chapter at a stretch.
In order to apply your new language, try prohibitting English at meal times or for one meal a day. This can be amusing and the whole family could become involved. You will be astonished how quickly you will learn enough to say what you want to

Are you going to give a baby shower soon? Or have you recently been invited to one and you are not sure what to do? If so, you will be expected to give a present to the baby to help welcome him or her into the world. This is fine, but a great deal of individuals, particularly single men, wonder what it is exactly that a baby so desperately needs.
If you fall into this category or if you want to take a scatter-gun approach to giving a present in the hope that something will be of use, then you should think about procuring the baby a baby gift basket. You see, a baby gift basket contains a great deal of small items or big objects or a mixture of the two. Whatever you can come up with or afford really.
There are two ways of getting a baby gift basket. You can either purchase one taylor-made or you can buy a basket and pick-and-mix the contents yourself. So, let us suppose that you are going to avoid duplication and fill your own basket.
To begin with the basket. A traditional wicker basket like the ones they show on toffee tins, in which a maid is carrying eggs is pretty, but also pretty costly. You could get a plastic version, but perhaps the box that the gifts are in is not as important as the gifts themselves. You could make your own by lining and wrapping a suitably-sized box and finishing it with a bow.
The contents. What do babies need? Or are you going to put some items in there for the parents too? If you are going to add a few items for the parents too, I will leave that up to you as you know them better than I do, I should imagine.
What can you get for the baby then? Something instructive is a must; something to occupy the baby’s attention, perhaps like a mobile or a decorative abacus to string across the pram. How about music? Brahm’s Lullaby is fantastic, with or without voices, in German or in English, but get it sung by a choir or a solo, but professionally-trained singer – not Lady Gaga.
When choosing music remember that by the time the baby can understand the words, the CD will have been lost, scratched or worn out. Go for peaceful music, classical is best in this instance.
Other items that always come in useful are bibs, teething rings, special beakers and a small plate or dish. I do not think it is a good thing to do to get shampoos and soaps, it is better to let mum purchase them or you might be blamed for allergic reactions and dandruff. However, talcum powder is a fairly safe bet, but do not purchase anything strongly perfumed.
Personalized bedding is a good notion. If you buy a cot blanket, try to get one the same size as the cot for safety reasons. A lovely touch is to have the baby’s monogram or initials embroidered on it. That does not work well for clothing, because kids grow out of them, but it is great for quilts and pillow cases.
Buy the bedding and ask (or pay) someone to do the embroidery for you. The child will grow out of the cot, but the blanket can then be used as a comforter. Embroidered pillow cases have a likewise long life.
Some individuals give sweets and biscuits, but personally I am not in favour of helping someone to rot their teeth, encouraging a sweet tooth or overweight babies. A decent bottle of wine though is another matter, but you will need to take advice on whether it will be at its peak in twenty years time. Good Port is a safe bet. Spirits do not mature in a bottle.

If you and your partner are interested in a romantic vacation, you may have a hard time deciding on a locality because there is such a large number of vacation destinations to choose from. However, I would like to suggest St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands, which lies in the Caribbean.
St. Thomas is well-known for its romantic holidays. Hundreds of thousands of couples have been vacationing in St. Thomas in order to get pleasure from an exclusive, intimate, and romantic break. If you are asking yourself why St. Thomas is such as wonderful place for romantic breaks, you ought to read more about St. Thomas on their official Internet web site.
The Caribbean, in general, is well known for its wonderful, hot weather and this sort of setting is many couples’ ideal romantic getaway. The lovely weather means unparalleled opportunities for swimming and other beach activities. If seeing all the beautiful people in their bathing costumes does not turn you on then nothing will!.
However, do not think that St. Thomas is only intended for younger people. It caters very well for people of all age groups, although some areas are ‘adults only’. So, if you will have to check up on any age restrictions on some of the private beaches. Some may be Club 18-30, others may not admit under 18 year olds.
The ‘adults only’ resorts in St. Thomas are perfect for romantic holidays. The hotel rooms in these resorts are also of a higher class. Many of them have marine views and large in room baths or jacuzzis. If you can get hold of one these rooms, you may not even want to go outside.
However, if you do want to venture outside, many of St. Thomas’ beach resorts offer outstanding opportunities for all kinds of water sports like boat trips, snorkeling and assisted scuba diving tours. If you are not water-orientated or you want to have a go at something on land then there is horseback riding too. Horse riding along the coast is very popular. Many resorts have their own specialist activities, so when you book your holiday, make sure you check out what is available to you in that locality.
There are ample opportunities for shopping and sight-seeing on your own as well. You could hire a car and head up the coast or inland to one of the national parks, where you may see wildlife or find a secluded restaurant serving delectable local food.
Last, but definitely not least, in the list of romantic things to do in St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands is to get wed. There are fewer restrictions on marriage for American couples than on mainland America. The only observances are a $50 fee and an eight day posting of bans to declare your intention to wed. You can get married at almost any time of the day or night. So, a sunset wedding on the beach is easily workable and is, in fact, one of the most popular romantic reasons for young couples coming to St. Thomas.

No one actually knows when stained glass was first invented because it occurred before people really recorded history. However, some historians think that it was first used as a luxury in the homes of wealthy Romans in the first century AD. Stained glass was finally recognized as an art form in the fourth century as Christians started to worship openly and to construct elaborate churches in which to celebrate their religion.
On the other hand, some historians demonstrate that there are signs in pre-Christian ruins that suggest that pagans used stained glass in their rites. Although we will probably never really know the start of stained glass, it is fairly clear that the spread of Christianity is directly related to the spread of use of stained glass.
The Gothic Era commenced in the 12th Century and stained glass windows became an essential element in the design of cathedrals. It really all started with the pioneering style of the St. Denis, France, where stained glass windows were used to convey light into the church itself and into the minds of its worshipers. Sadly, most of the stained glass in the St. Denis Cathedral was destroyed in the course of the French Revolution, but there are a few pieces left and even some complete windows on exhibit in Europe.
Gothic style stained glass was composed of strong lines, but these increasingly went out of style as the Renaissance began. Throughout the Renaissance, artisans depicted better detail and more delicate colouring in order to add to the realism. Stained glass windows became more like paintings on glass than architectural features and some of the notable elements such as lead lines vanished. Because of the problems in showing the great detail essential to the Renaissance era, the old style, which was original stained glass almost died out.
In view of the fact that stained glass was used by and large by the Catholic Church, a great deal of the work was smashed during the reign of King Henry VIII after his break with the Pope. However, not only old stained glass windows were destroyed, but many of the glass making works were sabotaged too. However, religious turmoil was not the only cause of the decline of stained glass.
The fashion of the Baroque era was for more detailed murals, which meant the use of clear glass. Therefore, many of the remaining stained glass windows were allowed to fall into disrepair, and furthermore not many new stained glass windows were produced. In the late 17th century, the public mood returned to the Gothic style of architecture, which produced a renewed fascination in stained glass windows.
Artisans still tried to paint directly onto the glass at first, but later tried to imitate the old leaden frames of medieval times. However, since the earlier methods had not been used for such a long time, they had grown to be forgotten and the artisans of the period were unable to reconstruct the exact designs used in Gothic stained glass.
During the 19th century, La Farge and Tiffany created new variations of stained glass. La Farge was interested in window designs, while Tiffany went into new areas like the Tiffany lamp shade.
These days, stained glass artists are not constricted by religious styles, although much of the work they do involves refurbishment. Modern stained glass is also used as the centre pane in front doors, especially uPVC doors, by rich and poor equally in the West.

If you are feeling romantic and you want to be alone with your loved one in a romantic place far from petty distractions, why not go to Paris and take a cruise? The cruise ships are beautiful and offer haute cuisine with fine wines and a wide selection of dishes. Service on board is excellent and if they know that it is a special trip for you, they will go out of their way to make it even more special.
Just by selecting the city of Paris as your venue, you will be conveying the impression of romance, because as everybody knows, Paris has the reputation of being the capital of the world of romance.
So, how do you go about booking one of these cruises? Well, obviously, first of all, you have to be in Paris. This is not a difficulty, if you live in Europe as there are flights and sleeper trains. If you are American, you will have to take the longer-term view and start saving for next year.
Once in your hotel in Paris, you can either ask reception for details or go to one of the many Tourist Information Centres, where everybody speaks English. The cruise line staff will pick you up from your hotel on the chosen day, so that you will not have the hassle of having to find your way through a strange, busy city alone.
Once on board, the pampering starts with your welcoming on board and a complimentary drink to ignite the fires of romance. You will enjoy four or more hours of this, depending on which cruise you decide on, but they are all wonderfully romantic voyages aboard beautiful cruise liners.
Generally speaking, the cruise will start on the left bank of the river Seine, usually in the vicinity of the Eiffel Tower. Some of these boats are made of a type of perspex, so that your view of the streets and monuments is unimpeded. And of course, all the sights are lit up at night and in quite a stunning fashion too. You will also be able to gaze downwards into the water itself.
As you cruise on this glass boat you will be entertained by some of the finest musicians that Paris can offer you. Solo instrumentalists; quartets; classical music; solo artiste singers or a duet. There are also cruises with more modern music too, but I don’t find them as romantic as the more traditional stuff. However, you can take all these particulars into account when you book your romantic cruise in Paris.
You will not only pass by celebrated landmarks, you will also pass very close by them and even underneath them. Famous bridges; Notre Dame; the Louvre, and many more. Not only that, but you will see all these incredible historical monuments while being pampered by the best hosts that Paris has to offer and drinking fine wines and champagne, seated at the bow of the cruiser in luxury.
Once your romantic cruise and your meal are over, you will be taken to a lavish show on the Champs Elysees, where you will be given a half bottle of champagne on entry. There is no need to worry about driving, so let your hair down and enjoy yourselves.
When you have had a sufficient amount of the high life, you will be transported back to your hotel, in the same manner that you were picked up. However, there are other choices too. You may want to go back to the hotel on a romantic horse and carriage, it will maintain that romantic mood.
Once you get back to your hotel, why not both get in the bath together? Light a few scented candles, open another bottle of wine and play some soft music. It will be an evening you will both remember for the rest of your lives, I promise you.

In all probability the first name that comes to mind whilst thinking of the history of cartoons is that of Punch.
It was a British weekly magazine of humour and satire published between 1841 and 1992. It was started in July 1841 by Henry Mayhew who, with Mark Lemon, was accountable for the editing, and engraver Ebenezer Landells who took care of the illustrations.
Its initial sub-title was The London Charivari, after a French satirical humour publication known as Le Charivari. Revealing their satiric and humorous intent, the two editors took the name of the anarchic glove puppet, Mr. Punch, of Punch and Judy fame as the title of the new periodical.
On the other hand the name is also a play on words regarding the name of the co-editor Mark Lemon, in that “punch is nothing without lemon”. Mayhew did not stay with the publication for long. He ceased being joint editor in 1842 and became “suggestor in chief” until he left in 1845.
Punch was responsible for the word “cartoon” in the sense of a comic drawing. In fact one of its most famous cartoons, drawn by George Du Maurier, the grandfather of the novelist Dame Daphne Du Maurier , gave birth to the expression ?it is good in parts, like the curate?s egg?. The phrase derives from a cartoon entitled “True Humility”.
It pictured a nervous-looking curate taking breakfast in his bishop’s house. The bishop says, “I’m afraid you’ve got a bad egg, Mr Jones.” The curate replies, “Oh, no, my Lord, I assure you that parts of it are excellent!”
However probably its most famous cartoon is entitled ? Dropping the Pilot? . This was a political cartoon by Sir John Tenniel, first published in March 1890. It depicts the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, as a shipping pilot, stepping off a ship watched by the German Emperor Wilhelm II. Bismarck had recently resigned as Chancellor at Wilhelm’s insistence.
After a very difficult beginning with much financial trouble and lack of market success, Punch became a must-have for British middle class drawing rooms because it not only displayed a sophisticated sense of humour and but did not contain the offensive material so prevalent in much of the alternative satirical press of the time.
The Times used small parts from Punch as column fillers, giving the publication free publicity and indirectly conferring a degree of respectability, However respectability was truly achieved when it was learned that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were to be discovered amongst it readership.
The circulation of Punch peaked during the 1940s at 175,000 but thereafter fell into deterioration, until in 1992 ,after 150 years the publication was compelled to close.
In 1996, the Egyptian businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed became tired of the many criticisms he had to put up with from the magazine Private Eye and purchased the rights to the Punch name with a view to using it to contend with his antagonist. He relaunched it later that year, but it never achieved any degree of circulation or profitability and in May 2002 it was announced that Punch would at long last close for good

Baby showers are popular events, especially in America. A baby shower is usually given or hosted by a friend of the expectant mother, usually before the birth but sometimes after it too. The purpose of the baby shower is to collect presents for the child and its parents, which is why family of the mother find it awkward to organize the baby shower themselves – it seems too much like begging.
If you can get a friend to organize a baby shower for you or if someone offers to do it, the invitations should be sent out a month or two before the birth day, so that the mother is not in too much uneasiness and is not likely to drop the baby during the party.
It is nice to have handmade baby shower invitations. There are two ways that you can do this: either design the invitation card yourself and have it printed out or select a template at the printers. Both ideas give satisfactory results.
If you have the invitations printed to a standard size, you can purchase cheap envelopes at a budget stationery office, but if you go for some weird size, ask the printer to provide the envelopes too.
Standard details like the date, the time, the venue, your name and the baby’s name can all be printed but you will have to write or type the recipient’s name in personally. Add your phone number too so that people can ask questions if they have any. If you would like the party (and the presents) to have a theme, you ought to state that on the invitation. Perhaps the card could be in the same theme too.
In fact, if you want to go down that route, you could download a fitting image off the Internet, say, a scene from Peter Rabbit, and give that to the printer so that they can print that onto your card.
People are very busy these days, so make sure you give your friends at least a month to book you in and get a fitting present for the shower. If you want to be fairly sure how many people are coming, enclose a stamped, self-addressed postcard in with the invitation, so that they can let you know easily.
If you are searching for things to do during the party, you could get people to suggest names for your baby and guess the sex or weight of it too. You could use a cross on a chain as a pendant to see if it the movement predicts a boy or girl and how many people get the same movement. You could also discuss themes for the child’s nursery after it is born, one for if it is a boy and one for if it is a boy.
