Horse lovers and riding aficionados often like to demonstrate their affection for the animals and their hobby. There are a number of methods of doing this. Children might decorate their bedrooms with wallpaper with horses on it or wear badges.

I saw a car a while ago with the number plate “HOR5E” and I have seen men wearing rings with a design of a horse running inlaid into the stone in gold. Women frequently wear brooches of a comparable design or only the head of a horse.

Equestrian jewellery is stylish and also timeless enough to be worn on any occasion. A beautiful horse’s head drawn in tiny diamonds makes a stunning brooch, but so does one fashioned from gold or silver. In fact, numerous jewellers are realizing the popularity of equestrian jewellery.

Although the horse’s head brooch is probably the most traditional piece of equestrian jewellery, pendants are also well-liked these days. The jeweller can craft a larger figure when it is suspended about the neck than if it is attached to the hair or clothing.

You may not have seen the type of jewellery that I am describing, but I bet that you have seen the Lucky Horse Shoe displayed somewhere. The Lucky Horse Shoe is only another aspect of equestrian jewellery. Many women like to wear them around their necks or on a Charm Bracelet.

The most famous symbol of a horse is probably the Ferrari logo. The Ferrari logo of a rearing horse not just adorns their cars, but can also be seen on official Ferrari artefacts such as Ferrari jewellery, Ferrari watches and Ferrari shirts and jumpers.

However, equestrian jewellery does not only come in the form of the horses themselves. The accoutrements to riding are also frequently represented in jewellery. Men often use cuff links in the form of tiny stirrups and women often wear silver or gold riding boots on their Lucky Charm bracelets.

Besides the above-mentioned equestrian lucky charms, I have also seen horse buckets, saddles and hunting horns on ladies’ charm bracelets or as single charms suspended from the ears or around the neck. They can also be worn as larger pieces as brooches.

Much of this type of jewellery is meant for the more well-to-do horsey set and for girls as they go through their horse-loving stage. Therefore, the pieces are manufactured in two distinct types: costly and the not so expensive – otherwise very few girls would get the opportunity to show their affection for their large four-legged friends.

The last group of people that can frequently be seen wearing equestrian jewellery is the gambler who likes to bet on horse racing. This is normally a man, but certainly not always.

These men will frequently wear pins of some kind depicting an aspect of their love of the sport and the animals. They might also think of them as lucky charms too.

Everyone who uses a computer for any reason needs to take backups. Even if you merely play games on your computer, you will like to remember your highest score and your place in the game, but if you run a business with that computer, then backups are even more vital. They are totally necessary.

Data is an important tool in any business and it is necessary for an IT business – it is the earnings stream, the more vital your data is, the more you should cherish your data backups. Most individuals store their data backups on removable disks – thirty years ago it would have been on tape or 4.25 inch floppy disks; twenty years ago, it would have been on 2.5 inch disks and ten years ago until now on CD.

However, none of these media is completely reliable. Data on these traditional media is prone to deterioration, a sort of natural wastage. However, they can also get destroyed in a fire or by magnetic fields, be stolen or become lost. This is not really a satisfactory situation for a business that depends on its data.

So what is the solution? IT experts have been struggling with that question for fifty years. Off-site storage is one solution. This means that you should make at least two backups of your data at given points during the day, put one in your office safe and send one by courier to a safe storage depot owned either by yourself or by a data storage firm.

This is still the system that most companies use, if they back up their data on a ordinary basis at all. It is inexpensive and at least two times as safe as storing your backup data on the office premises. After all, it is extremely unlikely that two buildings will burn down or get robbed on the same day.

However, that still depends on the data being backed up correctly. For data to get securely backed up, it should become backed up and then verified. If you have a lot of data this can become a lengthy process if you only have one or two aging PC’s in the office. If this is a fact, people frequently skip verification or only back up properly once a week.

I have been in both these situation. Fifteen years ago, I did not verify our company data and had three months of unusable rubbish, when our hard drive crashed, because I had not verified it and something was wrong with the back up program and ten years ago, I had a good backup, but it was a week old and had to pay my secretary a week’s overtime to re-input that week’s data.

These days, I create all my backups by the book, but by a new procedure. I now use a cloud drive. This sounds fanciful, but what it means is that i send my data to another firm somewhere in the world automatically over the Internet every day. It occurs in the background automatically. You just set the program up, tell it what data to backup and off it goes.

This is the very best kind of data backup that I have ever found and it is cheap to free. Several businesses offer free storage up to a certain amount of bandwidth or data storage capacity. Merely enter ‘cloud data storage’ into a search engine. Now all you have to worry about is what happens if the Internet is scrapped.

Hereunder is a list of minor holidays and occasions in the United States. Some of them are virtually unknown, and others are quite obscure.

April Fools’ Day – (April 1): the day for practical jokes (only before noon in the UK). Its origins are obscure, but it bears a similarity to an ancient Roman festival for the goddess of nature.

Arbor Day – (last Friday in April): devoted to trees and their preservation. It is held on December 22 everywhere else in the world.

Armed Forces Day – (third Sunday in May): a day to honour the US armed forces.

Citizenship Day – (September 17): replaced Constitution Day in 1952 by presidential proclamation.

Daylight-Saving Time: was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, but became the Uniform Time Act in 1966. It is not observed in Hawaii, the Eastern Time Zone of Indiana, most of Arizona (except on the Navajo Reservation), American Samoa, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam.

Election Day – (Tuesday after the first Monday in November): presidential elections are held in years divisible by four and elections for all members of the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate in years evenly divisible by two.

Fathers’ Day – (third Sunday in June): was first observed in West Virginia in 1908, but this uniquely American holiday was not made official until 1972.

Flag Day – (June 14): was first observed in 1877, which was the centenary of the adoption of the modern design. Truman approved the Flag Day Bill in 1949.

Groundhog Day – (February 2): on this day the groundhog looks out of his burrow. If he sees his own shadow there will be six weeks of Winter to follow, otherwise Spring is just around the corner.

Halloween – (October 31): All Hallow’s Eve is the day before the feast of All Saints. It began as a pagan custom honouring the dead and a celebration of Autumn. ‘Trick or Treat’ is purely American with no historical foundation.

Kwanzaa – is a secular celebration by African-Americans to commemorate their African heritage. It commences on Dec.26th when a candle in a candelabrum is lit every day for seven days. It was first observed by Maulana Karenga in 1966.

Mothers’ Day – (second Sunday in May): was thought of by Anne M. Jarvis of Philadelphia as a way for children to pay homage to their mothers. It received presidential proclamation in 1914.

National Maritime Day – (May 22): was initiated in 1935 to commemorate the SS Savannah’s first successful transatlantic voyage by a steamship in 1819. It is also a day of remembrance of merchant mariners who died in defense of their country.

National Teachers’ Day – (Tuesday of the first full week in May): is when pupils are meant to honour the teaching profession.

St. Patrick’s Day – (March 17): has been borrowed from Ireland where it is their national saint’s day.

St. Valentine’s Day – (February 14): was originally to honour two saints martyred by Emperor Claudius (214 – 270), but has been devoted to lovers since the Middle Ages.

Susan B. Anthony Day – (February 15): Anthony (1820 – 1906) worked for women’s rights and suffrage.

United Nations’ Day – (October 24): commemorates the endorsement of the UN Charter in 1945 by the then five permanent members of the Security Council.

For most individuals, purchasing a hot tub spa, also known as a gazebo, a hot spa or a Jacuzzi, is a first time event. This makes it quite a daunting undertaking, because they are not cheap and there are numerous variables.

You have to do research on the different types of jets, the power of the pump that is best for you, the location, whether to install a deck around it or not et cetera, et cetera. In this piece, we will take a look at a few of these points to make buying a hot tub easier for you.

The first thing to think about is size. This usually depends on two items: where you are going to put the hot tub and how many individuals are going to be using it at a time. If you are hoping to put it above the ground floor inside your home, you will have to check the weight of the spa while it is full of water and people to see whether your floor will take that weight without reinforcement. If the climate is decent where you live, the garden is the best place to put it.

The next deliberation is price. There is a vast choice of hot tubs and a wide span of prices too. If you find that the price of a new hot tub is just out of your range, what about purchasing a second hand one?

There is rather a large second hand market in Jacuzzis because hotels, health spas and some home owners have to renew their models. You might be lucky enough to find quite a luxurious second hand model for less than the price of a new cheap one. Enquire at a local installer’s for details.

The next thing is the material that the actual tub is made from. This is not inevitably the same as the housing or cabinet that goes around the tub. Traditional-style hot tubs are made from local hardwoods such as cedar, oak, redwood or teak, but they are heavy and leak a little.

Contemporary materials used are a mixture of plastic and fibreglass moulded into comfortable seating arrangements. They are lighter and do not leak (or should not).

Then you can think about the housing. Is the hot tub going to stand on its own somewhere or is it going to be built in? if you are going to build it in, what are you going to build it into? A deck? Hardwood, softwood, concrete and tiles?

Then there is the routine maintenance of the tub. This is not difficult but it is essential, so if you are building your tub into something, remember that you will have to have access to certain parts of it. Read the instruction manual of the tub that you buy to learn which parts will require maintenance and cleaning.

Usually, this involves cleaning the jets, adding chemicals to the water, renewing filters and maybe renewing a seal on the pump, which could be assigned to an engineer in an annual service contract.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on a variety of topics, but is now concerned with second hand hot tubs.

Swarming is carried out by numerous animals and some plants, but in English we use special words to describe it. Horses, cattle and sheep frequently run together as a herd or a flock; fish swim together as a shoal or a school; some plants move through the sea together as a bloom and some flying insects swarm in the same way in the air.

Bees swarm when a colony or part of a colony has to find a new nest. Normally, the swarm will fly to a location very close to the old nest and huddle together whilst the most knowledgeable worker bees fly off to look for a suitable nesting site.

There could be as many as 50 of these scouts and they might fly up to a kilometre to find a good spot. The scouts will probably take into account the potential size of nest that could be built there, because it has to house the present number of bees plus any eggs and offspring that will inevitably come.

They probably also concern themselves with the availability of a not-too distant food source and shelter from predators, as there are birds and some insects that consume bees and others that may steal their honey.

The swarm will wait for the scouts to come back. As they come back, normally one at a time, they perform a little dance to explain what they have discovered and where it is. The hive can almost certainly judge how credible the proposed new location is by the enthusiasm displayed in the dance.

All the bees watch the dances and an especially fervent scout may persuade another scout to go with her to reconnoitre her find. They might visit a number of finds several times, but sooner or later the scouts will settle for one of the locations and report back to the swarm.

The sight of up to 50 scouts all dancing enthusiastically about the best of the new locations is enough to enthuse the swarm and it will take off and follow the scouts to its new home.

Of course, beekeepers do not like to lose their swarms or part of them each year, so they place luxury homes nearby to attract the bees into. If that does not work, the bee-keeper has to purchase a new swarm or swarms, something that is becoming increasingly a problem to do.

Beekeepers wishing to attract a new wild swarm frequently use a pheromone to attract the scouts to the new hives that they have set up near existing hives close to an ample source of trees, wild flowers or bushes.

If bees choose a new site in or around your home, your first thoughts ought to not be to destroy it. Bees seldom attack unless they feel threatened, so if the hive is far from the house, you could leave it there.

However, if they start building in your attic, they may cause some structural damage, besides being a nuisance. If this is the case, phone your local environmental health agency or a local beekeeper to remove it for you.

Today, each schoolboy knows the story of William Webb Ellis, the Rugby School pupil “who with a fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it”. The presentation trophy for the Rugby World Cup is named the Webb Ellis trophy in his honour, and his “achievement” is commemorated by a plaque at the school

There is only one thing wrong with this story. It simply is not a fact. It was not until four years after the death of Webb Ellis in 1876 that the story first saw the light of day and its source is thought to come from a local antiquarian and former Rugbeian Matthew Bloxam.

He was not a contemporary of Webb Ellis but says that the story was told to him by an unnamed source some 53 years after the incident is alleged to have taken place.

In 1823, when the event is alleged to have happened, the rules of rugby had yet to be formulated and any alterations, such as the legality of carrying or running with the ball, were frequently agreed on an ad hoc basis a short time before the beginning of a game.

There were therefore no official rules for football during the period William Webb Ellis was at the school (1816?25). It was not until 1845, some 200 years after football was first played at Rugby School, that three pupils published the first written rules of the game.

For many years it had been the boys, and not the masters who had set down the rules which were frequently modified by every new generation of students.

Guy’s Hospital Football Club, formed in London in 1843, by old boys from Rugby School, has strong claims to be the oldest football club in the world. It definitely predates by 14 years the creation of Sheffield FC, believed to be the oldest club playing association football.

In 1871, after a number of contentious disputes with the Football Association, 21 clubs met in London to form an association of those clubs ‘who play the rugby-type game’.

And so the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was formed. The first International rugby game was played on 27 March 1871 between England and Scotland. The English team wore white shirts ornamented with a red rose and the Scots brown shirts with a thistle. (Scotland won the match).

The worries and conflicts regarding amateurism and professionalism had long proved a thorny topic. The representatives of Yorkshire and Lancashire are accredited with bringing in rules concerning amateurism in 1879.

These rules were finally formalized by the RFU in 1886. It is broadly believed that the northern clubs were in favour of the professional game whereas these northern bodies were strong advocates of amateurism,

However, conflict arose over the controversy regarding ‘broken time’, the topic of whether players should receive reimbursement for taking time off work to play.

The northern clubs had a large number of working class players who had either to miss games due to working commitments, or give up their wages in order to play rugby. By 1892, this subject of broken time payments was a problem not just for northern clubs such as Bradford and Leeds but also for clubs in the south.

It became an anxiety of the RFU: these broken time repayments would become a quick path to professionalism.

On 29 August 1895, 20 clubs from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire met at the George Hotel, Huddersfield and decided to resign from the RFU and create the Northern Rugby Football Union, which from 1922 became the Rugby Football League.

The dispute about compensation was one which at the time was also upsetting soccer and cricket. Every game had to work out a compromise; rugby’s stance was the most extreme. Amateurism was strictly enforced, and anyone accepting payment for playing rugby league was banned.

However, on 26 August 1995 the International Rugby Board declared rugby union an “open” game and thereby removed all restrictions on payments or benefits to those connected with the game.

It did this because of a committee’s decision that to do so was the only manner to end the hypocrisy of sham amateurism and to keep control of rugby union. The wheel had turned full circle.

If you want to redecorate, you must be thinking of the fabrics that you will use in your redecorating scheme. There are quite a lot of textiles that can play a role in a redecoration project, such as carpets, some wall papers, such as flock, furnishings, cushions, lamp shades and wall hangings like tapestries and embroideries.

You can use the fabrics in these items to create a decoration theme over any other set of objects. You can buy old furniture, but it is expensive, you can purchase old paintings, but they are expensive, but textiles can be new yet still convey different atmospheres for little money. Think about the fabrics and colours that you would require to convey primitive, Eastern, Hispanic, Victorian or contemporary themes.

Let’s say that you would like to decorate your home in a Victorian style. It is the case that it would be right to have some old furniture, but what will really make the style scream ‘Victorian’ is the textiles. You have to think about Victorian houses: they were fairly large (unless you would like to live in a hovel), and they were drafty.

This meant that the fabrics were weighty to hold back drafts. You could hang flock wallpaper, have heavy, lined curtains, lamp shades with tassels and heavy bedding with a real eiderdown or patchwork quilt.

The funny thing is that although Victorian textiles were very weighty, they tried to make them look very feminine, or perhaps that was why they tried to make them look more feminine. However, men provided the earnings and women ran the home in those days, so that may be why as well.

Therefore, there were lace edgings, lace trims, tassels, beading, velvet and brocade. Embroidery exam pieces can sometimes be picked up quite cheaply , but they are often handed down through families too.

A modern style or theme would have lots of bright and frequently contrasting colours. An extreme variation of contemporary style is minimalist with plenty of black and white but with maybe one splash of yellow in a corner somewhere. This style can be hard to achieve, can be unsettling, but can be dazzling as well. It is suggestive of the Sixties.

Some people try to recreate an Eastern or Oriental style, but you have to be careful because otherwise you will end up with something that no Easterner would recognize. A bit like Charlie Chan and western style curries. You will be told to use pictures and figurines of elephants, tigers, dragons, carp and geese or ducks. This is all very well if you want to persuade your Western friends that you have an Oriental theme of decoration, but not many Orientals would recognize it.

It is very difficult to get this theme looking authentic unless you are from the Far East or you get an Easterner in to assist you. Jades and silks could form a part of this styles along with some figurines. Be very wary of attempting to imitate a style you know nothing of.

Individuals have always liked to play games after work or school and that has not changed today, but what has altered is the complexity of the item supplying the game. Before the Second World War, the most complicated popular games were almost certainly chess and Bridge and most kids played football. Nothing complicated in the games systems there.

In the Fifties and Sixties, the pinball machine was almost certainly the most complicated item playable but it was too expensive for most individuals to have in their homes.

However, despite the fact that they were complicated (for the day), they were made up of transistors, diodes, springs, light bulbs and rubber bands. You could see the moving parts and the scorch marks where something had burned out.

However, since the Seventies, the machines that supply our distraction have no moving pieces except perhaps a joystick and hardly anyone has a clue what happens inside that appropriately-named Xbox and they have no clue about repairing it themselves.

So what does go on inside that mysterious video games machine and how can it produce so much satisfaction for so many without a single rubber band or spring in sight?

First, there is a big difference between a games computer and a video game console. A normal office computer to be used for routine admin and the Web does not have to be anything extraordinary, but a games computer has to have more RAM, the fastest CPU and the fastest graphics card to be any use.

A games console attempts to emulate a games computer, but strips out any component that is not absolutely crucial to play games. The distinction is becoming more and more blurred as gamers require more powerful interactive, multi-player games that they can use over the Internet whilst chatting with their mates in chat rooms, which are often dedicated to the game in hand.

Games consoles will have a cut-down operating system, because it does not have to be ‘ready for anything’, so games load much more quickly. They are typically more robust than a computer too, because manufacturers know that some gamers get carried away.

They may even get more waterproof than your average laptop. They are often easier to connect to a screen or home movie theatre system too because numerous crowd who use them are not technically minded, but might want to take the console to a friend’s house.

The insides of the games machine have not altered much since the Ataris of the Eighties. That is to say the level of sophistication has, but the names for the components have not. A games console still has a CPU, RAM, audio out, video out, a user control interface, a power supply and a means of loading the game. The only new things are the DVD and Net connections

There is no question that contemporary gaming machines are far better than the old Ataris of 30 years ago, but the technology is merely better, not different, which goes to show either how inventive Atari were or modern console makers are not.

After my first night out in Pattaya, Thailand, when I met a lady on a blind date organized by one of my best friends, I sat up in bed and I thought about the details of the night before. We had begun in The Pig and Whistle, where I was residing on Soi 7.

The Pig is a lovely, quiet, tranquil, air-conditioned oasis of serenity in a street, which is one of the most raucous, loudest and busiest streets in Pattaya.

We ventured outside into the soi (lane) and into a torrent of people not dissimilar to that of a queue heading for a football match, except that all the women were dressed in skimpy clothes. We had called into one of those outdoor bars, where my friend had a surprise awaiting me.

His girlfriend of a time, whom I knew nothing of and a friend of hers who wished to meet up with me. The four of us had stayed there an hour before walking the thirty metres to Beach Road.

The traffic is one-way on Beach Road, so we took a Baht Taxi North (a pick-up truck) going with the flow and got off two or three kilometres further on just before Walking Street, which is the most famous street in Pattaya.

We had gone into a complex of bars and sat in one at random. It was only then that I realized that the bars were all set out surrounding a Muay Thai boxing ring, where the fighting was uninterrupted and free, although foreigners are expected to give a prize to the winner of each bout of 20-100 Baht ($1-$3).

We stayed there an hour and moved on to Walking Street to have something to eat. We dined at a seafood specialist restaurant which has a pier or jetty as its dining area. The food was fantastic and the mood was romantic with the moon reflecting on the sea and the atmospheric lighting.

I don’t think that I had a chance in reality, I fell for my gorgeous date that night and I saw her each day for the remainder of my 30 days vacation. We had a brilliant time and when I had to go, I resolved to find out if I could settle in Thailand.

I went home and calculated, that if I was careful and a few things fell in my favour, I would most likely have enough money to live there for ten years.

Six weeks later, I went back to Thailand and Joy was waiting for me at the airport. Nothing had changed between us and we took a bus to visit her family in northern Thailand.

We slept in a room that her brother had given up for us and everybody made me feel very welcome. Joy’s family live in a traditional teak home built on stilts and everybody lived and slept in one space in the traditional way, with the exception of Joy’s brother, who had built an extension, because he was eager to get married soon.

I really like that village and still live there now, seven years on. Joy and I are married and have our own home – a traditional, European, concrete-block bungalow not five metres from Joy’s mum, who is a fantastic mother-in-law.

Her family seem to understand what a big step it was for me to come here alone and are determined to be there for me, if I require help, like my own family in Wales would be. The job at hand is learning Thai as no one else in the village, except for my wife, can speak English.

Western people really like bread, although not everyone eats it because it is fattening.

Western people really like bread, although not everyone eats it because it is fattening. Eating a lot of bread is fattening, but decent bread is very sustaining, so there is no requirement to over indulge, which means that it does not have to become a burden on your waist band.

Likewise, decent bread does not require butter or margarine, so that is another saving on calories and fat.

Bread can also be a good source of dietary fibre and once you have consumed real bread, you will never go back to white, sliced, supermarket bread. In fact, it is the white, sliced bread that gives bread such a bad reputation.

These recipes are meant to be mixed and baked in a bread making machine, but they can be prepared by hand as well. I have used a bread making machine for years, but I used to mix it by hand before that, and I can honestly say that I can not differentiate between them.

Furthermore, the machine saves a lot of time and because it bakes on a timer, you can wake up to the smell of fresh bread every morning, if you want.

Recipe 1

Celery Bread

1 sachet yeast 1/4 teaspoon ginger 1/4 teaspoon sugar 3 cups Better for Bread flour 1/2 cup quick-cooking oats 2 tablespoons gluten 2 teaspoons celery seeds 1 1/2 teaspoons celery, garlic or onion salt 3/4 cup celery — fresh / slice thin 1 tablespoon celery leaves, fresh / chopped 1 egg 10 3/4 ounces cream of celery soup 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 3 tablespoons warm low-fat milk

Combine all ingredients and bake

Recipe 2

Citrus Bread

2/3 cup water 2 cups white bread flour 1 teaspoon dry milk 2 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon butter 2 tablespoons orange marmalade 2 teaspoons lime juice 1 pinch lemon peel 2 teaspoons yeast (active, dry)

Blend all items and bake.

Recipe 3

Chart House Squaw Bread

1 1/4 cups warm water 2 tablespoons molasses 1/2 teaspoon caramel coloring * — optional. 1 1/2 teaspoons malted barley flour ** 2 cups bread flour 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 1/2 cup unprocessed bran or wheat bran 1/4 cup dark brown sugar (3 TB) 1 1/2 tablespoons oat bran 1 1/2 tablespoons rolled oats 2 teaspoons granola 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 1/2 teaspoons yeast (1 envelope)

Oil and / or butter are not required.

* Caramel colouring is merely used to give the bread an almost pumpernickel colour. You can get it in a cake decorating store . ** The malted barley flour is also called diastatic malt powder.

In a basin mix the bread flour, whole wheat flour, unprocessed bran, dark brown sugar, oat bran, rolled oats, granola, malted barley flour and salt.

In a bread pan add water, molasses, and caramel colouing. Add flour mixture; top off with yeast and choose dark bread setting.

NOTE: Raisins may be added if required. If you do, eliminate the caramel colouring and liquefy in water, 1/4 cup raisins, molasses and brown sugar before adding to the machine.
