All RFID tags are used to store and ultimately send data. They can best be thought of as the replacement for the bar code. However, they have significant advantages over bar codes. Most boys and an increasing number of girls want to shoot. Not everyone wants to kill something but that is neither here nor there. Boys have almost certainly been playing with toy guns, toy bows and arrows or even toy spears for thousands of years.
And I venture to say that young girls have been playing with dolls and giving them tea parties for equally as long as well. While I was in infants’ school fifty years ago, our class had a Wendy House and girls and boys played in there together, although it was more for the girls – I do remember thinking that.
Traditional girls’ presents like dolls, dolls’ prams, Wendy Houses and toy tea sets sort of went out of fashion in the West in the last twenty-five years of the Twentieth Century, but they are back again now. These traditional girls’ toys can get seen in all the toys catalogues and toy shops such as Toys R Us.

Radio frequency identification or RFID is an old concept that has quietly become a large part of everyone’s life. RFID has been around for at least 90 years and was initially put into practice about 70 years, but not many people realized it. These days, you yourself are most likely scanned every day by an RFID reader and the things you purchase are certainly scanned at least once a week.
So what is RFID? Well, you can think of it as the update of the bar code although in fact, it is older than the bar code by 50 or 60 years. Bar codes were developed in order to integrate stock control with point of sales processing.
Everyone has seen this and is used to it: the sales clerk at the till takes the goods from your basket one at a time, looks for the bar code, flashes a light or a bar code reader over it and the cost of the article is added to your receipt.
What you do not see is that the computerized stock records for that article are reduced by one and the sales price is noted along side it. That system worked well for 40 years, but now there is a need for more information to be recorded than a bar code can accommodate and there is requirement for greater stock control and even more speed at the check out. Nobody has any time anymore.
Enter RFID, an old technology brought back to life. RFID is the technology that they used to put in Second World War aircraft in order to distinguish friendly aircraft to the RADAR-controlled anti-aircraft guns. The same technology, basically, that they still use in aircraft today to identify it to air traffic control. The difference is that until pretty recently, these radio signal emitters or transponders were as big as a suitcase and cost a lot of money.
These days they are the size of the tiniest coin in your change and cost about five cents. They win over the bar code because they can hold masses of data, such as where and when and by whom an item was made; how much it cost and how much it should be sold for; its colour, weight and description; which shelf and in which shop it should be kept on …. ad infinitum. The shop owner can write anything on that chip using an RFID printer.
And when it comes to the check out… No more reading each individual item by hand, because each RFID chip or tag, as they are called in the industry, emits its own data on its own unique radio frequency, therefore as long as the RFID scanner is within three or four feet of the trolley, it knows what is in there instantaneously. No more unloading, scanning and reloading the basket.
In fact, no more check out clerk. Most people pay with a credit or debit card these days anyway, so as you walk past the scanner with your basket, you are scanned; you swipe your credit card through another scanner; if you are happy with it, you approve the payment and the barrier raises for you to proceed to your car. You only have to have a check out clerk for the people who want to pay with cash. Cheques are being done away with soon anyway.

RFID (radio frequency identification) chips or tags as they are better known are the size of the smallest coin in your purse, but they can hold huge amounts of information that can be manipulated in methods that can do fantastic things.
For example, RFID tags are in most office identity tags and in a few passports, allowing the holder to pass through security quickly while keeping the building or the country safe.
They are a modern version of the bar code. Remember before bar codes and bar code readers? When a shop keeper had to type prices into the cash register, correct mistakes and look up prices that they could not remember? People do not have any time for that anymore.
It is OK at the newsagents, but picture a teenager typing in your two trolleys of weekly shopping at the superstore every Saturday. You would still be there on Sunday! Supermarkets have thousands of articles and dozens of special offers – no-one could remember that lot.
No-one could, but bar codes make it straightforward and so do RFID tags. Bar codes work well, but they have to be seen to be read. RFID tags emit their information on a unique frequency which can be read out of line of sight. In other words, an RFID scanner does not have to see the tag to be able to read it.
The scanner can see what is in your trolley without you having to unload it and as you pass by that scanner and pay for your things, they are deducted from stock straight away so that the warehouse manger can see what people are buying and what nobody wants to buy. So, if one brand of cat food is selling better than another, the manager will see that on the computer print-out and buy more of that make, thus keeping more people happy.
This use of RFID in stock control or asset management to give it its more official title, can translate itself into other uses too. An RFID tag can be put under your cat’s fur or in its collar so that you can locate him if he gets lost. The police and the wardens scan stray animals for a tag as part of their routine these days. Consevationists have been doing this with wild elephants, big cats and other endangered animals for years. Now you can have it done with your pets as well.
Company vehicles, as assets of the business, often carry RFID tags and you can have one placed in your car to aid recovery if it is stolen. Baggage handlers at airports or bus terminals can (and do) use them to avoid lost luggage.
The US government insists that RFID tags be placed on all vehicles carrying ammunition or hazardous substances and have done for nearly ten years. The US military is in fact the principal user of these tags in the world. RFID tags are used to track military assets such as armaments, battle tanks, fuel, containers, artillery, you name it.
Some people worry about RFID technology. Where is the line between their convenience and their personal information? For example, they do not like getting junk emails from people that have been able to track the purchases they made with their credit cards.

They could change the style of jewelery they wear and the colour or their hair and lipstick. Belts, brooches, watches and scarves can also serve the end of changing ones image. They could also wear a fresh flower on their lapel, in their hair or behind their ear for that old style gypsy look 
(that is the brave one).
Men have a slightly harder time of it without looking daft, but men can wear better shoes, wear a tie more often or a costly watch. They could carry a briefcase and an umbrella, and wear a flower in their button hole, but this is where it starts to look a bit contrived. They could also wear a monocle, a pocket watch or a bow tie.
My cousin wears a monocle and once you overcome your first instinct to laugh, you have to admit that he looks quite elegant. The same is the case with bow ties, which he wears as well and insists on tying it by hand. He also carries an umbrella, a briefcase and wears pinstripes. He is very brave and he is noticed and remembered wherever he goes.
However, you do not need to go that far. Even simply wearing a bow tie instead of a tie will set you apart. Have you noticed that if you are talking to someone wearing a bow tie you cannot help yourself staring at it? It is the men’s equivalent of a woman’s low-cut dress.
Anyway, accessories are a cheaper way of altering your image than going out and purchasing a new wardrobe of outfits and they are more easily combined that different suits. Go for colours that blend easily, like blacks, greys, browns and off-whites. Understatement is usually better than garish.

The electric bug killer is the best way of clearing the area around you of insects, especially the flying ones such as mosquitoes. The electric insect zapper evaporates any insect from a mosquito to a gnat instantly on contact with a nice, loud, electrical ‘crack’!
However, this is not to say that the indoor bug zapper cannot be used outside, as long as it is not raining. It should be treated like any other high voltage electrical equipment. Keep the electric bug zapper dry and definitely do not use it while you are standing in the pool!
Models vary greatly, but there are basically only two types of electric bug killer: the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric bug zapper. Both are equally effective at killing insects and employ the same principle.
The indoor bug killer resembles a ‘junior’ tennis racket, but with three sets of ‘strings’, which are in fact wires. The central network of wires becomes electrified at the touch of a button, while the other two networks, one on either side, are harmless earths.
When a bug is caught between the wires of the electric insect killer, it creates a short, which evaporates it instantaneously with a loud crack. The electric insect zapper will kill other bugs too, but they tend to burn rather than explode.
I have been using the rechargeable type for about five years and am extremely satisfied with the hand held bug zapper. In fact, the electric insect zapper has come a long way over the last few years. A fully charged indoor bug killer is powerful enough to last for several hundred swipes and will hold it’s charge, if unused, for weeks without any noticeable discharge.
The battery recharge pack will take intensive use for the best part of a year, although its ability to hold a charge for several weeks slowly diminishes after six or seven months.
The latest indoor bug zapper I’ve used has a main on/off switch, an LED that comes on when it is activated (the brightness of this light also gives an indication of the battery’s strength) and an LED that comes on when it is plugged in for recharge.
The instructions suggest that the bug zapper should be (re)charged for about sixteen hours. However, I usually put it on charge over night once or twice every week or two, although the hand held bug killer shows a marked increase in performance after only a few hours recharging.
The latest model I’ve seen also comes with a powerful beam called a ‘headlamp’. I have found this very useful when out in the garden, but I’m not sure whether it’s meant to attract the flies in the dark so that you can zap them if you’re bored. You know, like an anglerfish.
I’ve used the headlamp on my indoor bug killer for that reason as well, but the beam uses a lot of battery power. All in all, the electric insect killer is a big asset to any outdoor event. The hand held bug killer is useful for ‘clearing’ your bedroom before retiring; it’s unequalled for killing evening mosquitoes and it will eradicate wasps at a lunch table too.
